Know Your Client

    Every new client you get (and every client you currently have) should be assessed on a regular basis. As well as the usual weight and body fat measurements, your assessment should include some form of movement screen.

    Regardless of your clients goal, the programme you write for them will have them moving. Given that, you have to know how well they move before you write their programme, otherwise, you risk prescribing an exercise that is too hard or too easy.

    You must know what their squat looks like before you prescribe a squat variation.

    You must know their bend pattern before you prescribe a deadlift variation.

    The more detail you know about your new clients starting point, the better your programme can be and the quicker they can progress and get the results they came to you for.

Before Their Goal Is Achieved

    One of the main objectives of a movement screen is to find any sources of potential injury. Are there any faults present in certain movements that will eventually lead to injury.

    If there are, your first job is to correct those faults and prevent the injury from occurring.

    This part of the process is always a prerequisite to your clients goal. Regardless of whether their aim is fat loss, muscle gain, increasing strength or something else, getting them to an adequate level of movement comes first.

    The last thing you need as a trainer is a client with an injury that you could have prevented. The number one job of the movement screen is to detect any potential issues with key movements so they can be identified and corrected, before the injury occurs.

    Injured clients don’t stay as your clients for very long.
